:Matt brings up a good point...what IS the point of upgraded internals? :It seems how much boost you can run is limited by the fuel you get, and on pump fuel, 18psi is the recommended limit. The detonation threshold depends on the motor build, supporting mods, and the fuel quality, among other things. Forged pistons are more tolerant to abuse, and can survive occasional detonation. Stock cast pistons are more likely to break a ring land under similar conditions. My recommendation is to get it tuned for the fuel you plan on running, find your detonation threshold, and a run 2-3 psi below that as a safety buffer. Rod bearings don't like detonation either. :Are upgraded internals just a safeguard in case you do get knock, your engine can withstand it better? Yep, pretty much. Forged pistons aren't required at pump gas power levels on a properly tuned Z, but they are required to withstand the abuse that can come from pushing the limit on pump gas.
